If a friend or family member comes to visit you, they're probably going to be so happy to see you and spend time with you that they wouldn't mind sleeping on your couch for the duration of their stay. However, just because a guest is fine with accommodations that are far from what you'd find at a hotel doesn't mean that's all you want to offer. As a host, it's normal to want to make your guests as comfortable as possible. That desire is why if you're in the process of planning a custom home, you may be thinking about adding a guest room.

Traits That Make a Guest Room Great

When it comes to what makes a guest room truly great, privacy is generally at the top of the list. Although someone close to you is going to be happy to spend lots of time together, when they're ready to sleep, it's always nice to have space that feels comfortable and private. One of the best ways to make a guest room truly private is to give it a separate bathroom. Even though that may initially seem a little extravagant, since it's being done as part of a custom home project, it's actually much easier to integrate than most people realize.

Once you've got the privacy aspect of a guest room covered, the next thing to focus on is making it as comfortable as possible. A popular option for doing that is including two beds in the room. The advantage of choosing that approach is if two different friends or family members are staying with you, they'll both be comfortable in their own beds. And if it's a couple staying with you, it will only take a minute to push the two beds together so your guests can sleep by each other.

Another aspect you need to figure out is the design of the room. When it comes to guest rooms, less is more is usually a good approach to follow. Although you don't want your guest room to be so bare that it feels like a room in a psychiatric facility, you also want to avoid cramming too much into this space and making it too focused on your own preferences. By providing plenty of open space and giving a little injection of personality, you can provide an area where guests will feel completely relaxed.

The other really nice thing to do for your guests is to provide them with lots of amenities. Things like towels and shampoo in the bathroom are really nice to provide. And if your home has wireless Internet, a little card with the password will allow your guests to hop online even if you've already gone to bed.

As a host, it's nice to know that you're providing your guests with a truly pleasant experience. Since a guest room definitely plays a major role in making your guests feel comfortable and relaxed, it's very smart to include this room in your plan for a custom home.
