Open Vs. Closed Floor Plan: Which Option Is Right For You?

Posted on: September 9, 2013

One of the great things about choosing to have a custom home built is you have control over the floor plan. If you're in the process of ironing out the details of the floor plan you want, you may be deciding whether to go with an open or closed plan. In case you haven't heard the term open floor plan, it refers to a design that allows multiple rooms to function as a connected living space. For example, a popular open design is a great room that creates a flow between the living room, dining room and kitchen.

What's interesting about this trend is it can actually be traced back to a need for smaller homes to make the most of their space. However, thanks to all the benefits we're about to discuss, this layout can actually work very well even when space isn't an issue. So, what makes this type of floor plan so appealing? The first advantage is that an open design is pretty ideal for anyone who likes to entertain on a regular basis. Because people hanging out in the kitchen aren't cut off from those relaxing in the living room, it creates a great environment for everyone to mingle with each other during a party.

Open floor plans aren't only for those who like to entertain. They also work great for growing families. In today's digital world, getting quality family time can be a challenge. By having an open layout, kids can have fun in the living room and talk to their parents while they're preparing dinner for everyone. The other reason plenty of people like this type of home design is because it does a great job of letting in natural light. When a home has lots of natural light coming in, it's going to feel more open and inviting.

While there are definitely lots of things to like about open floor plans, that doesn't mean they're the perfect fit for every single home. Because your custom home is where you're going to be living for at least the next few years (and most likely significantly longer), you want to ensure you get exactly what you want. That's why it's important to also be aware of the strengths of closed floor plans.

Privacy is probably the biggest difference between an open and closed floor plan. If you don't like the idea of being able to see across a large portion of your home or are concerned about it being too noisy, sticking with a closed layout is probably going to be best for you. Another issue to consider is if you really enjoy decorating or even consider yourself to be an art collector, you're probably going to prefer the additional wall space provided by a closed plan.
