If you decide that you want a custom home built, there will be quite a few decisions you'll need to make during this process. Although that may sound stressful, since those decisions are all related to having the perfect home built for you and your family, you'll find that the process is actually quite rewarding.

One of the decisions you'll need to make during the planning stage of your custom home project is what size of garage you want. While a garage is a staple of most homes, the reality is it's not something most homeowners think about on a daily basis. Instead, they just know it's where they park their car(s) and store some of their extra stuff.

Because it's not a component that most people pay active attention to, when you're asked to choose what size you want, that question may trigger the realization that you're not exactly sure of what options are available. If you're concerned that's going to be a problem, the good news is it's actually not. Instead, once you get a basic understanding of the most common sizes, as well as what those sizes are capable of holding, you'll be able to pick the one that's right for your needs.

So, since all you really need is a solid source of information, where can you get that from? Well, we're actually going to dive into this topic right now:

What are the Most Common Garage Sizes?

The four most common garage sizes are 12 x 24, 14 x 28, 20 x 20, and 24 x 24. While there are other sizes, those are the four that are most commonly used with just about every size and style of house.

Which Garage Size is Best?

The reality is there's not just one right answer to that question. Instead, it all comes down to your specific needs. What's best for one person may not be ideal for you. The main reason not everyone should have the same size of garage is because there are three different factors that influence this decision.

The first is how many vehicles you want to park in your garage, as well as the size of each one. The second factor is if you plan on using your garage for storage. And the third factor is if you want any workspace in your garage.

When it comes to assessing size, a vehicle's length is 14' for an average car, 18' for a small pickup, and between 20' & 22' for a van, truck or SUV. Add at least 4' if you plan on storing anything, as well as a minimum of 10' if you want an area to work. With those estimates in mind, you can calculate which of the four standard garage sizes will provide the amount of space you need.

Although that really is all the key information you need to know about garage sizes, if you have any additional questions about this topic, feel free to send us an online message!
