Health Risks Associated With The Use of CFL Light Bulbs You Need to Know

Posted on: January 29, 2013

Compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFL’s as they are more commonly referred are the light bulbs which are fluorescent and look like a cork screw.  They will screw into a standard light socket and their use has become increasingly popular as a result of the green energy movement and government regulations.  CFL’s do use substantially less electric and last longer as compared to an incandescent bulb.  They also remit substantially less heat as compared to incandescent.  However, there are tradeoffs and their use has come under great scrutiny because of a wide array of health risk and hazards. Listed below are some general highlights about the use of CFL’s and risk associated with their use:

    1. Do not use the CFL bulbs in track or recessed fixtures or in an inverted fashion.
    2. CFL bulbs are not intended to be switched on and off in excess.  Excessive switching can reduce their life expectancy by as much as 85%.
    3. Make sure you understand how to safely clean up and dispose of a broken CFL bulb.  This is especially true with children or elderly present in the home.  CFL bulbs contain mercury vapor which is a known neurotoxin.  Upon breakage the mercury is released into your home.
    4. CFL’S should not be used with dimmer switches.
    5. CFL bulbs without an internal fuse will melt or smoke when the bulb burns out.  Usually found in bulbs made in China. It is critical to make sure the bulb has an internal fuse mechanism.
    6. When CFL bulbs do burn out - do not throw in the trash – they must be recycled in an authorized manner.
