An Attic Doesn't Have to be Limited to Just Storage

Posted on: September 9, 2013

What's the most underutilized space in the majority of homes? Although that question is a bit subjective, it's hard to argue with the answer being the attic. The reason the attic works so well as an answer is because so many people simply fill it with junk they're not very worried about and then forget about this space most of the time. While there's technically nothing wrong with doing that, many attics could be utilized in a much more interesting way with just some minor tweaks.

If you're planning to stay in your current home and aren't currently using your attic for anything other than storage, it's worth exploring other potential uses for this space. And if you're designing a custom home, you may decide that you want to design your attic so it can be used in an interesting manner:

Guest Room

Designing a custom home means you can incorporate a guest room into your plan. But if you're currently in a home that doesn't have a guest room, you may be able to transform your attic into a space where any guests who stay with you will be very comfortable sleeping.

 Additional Living Room

Many attics are laid out in a way that's ideal for turning them into a 2nd or 3rd family room. One of the nice things about using an attic for this purpose is you don't have to be quite as concerned about keeping the room organized as you do with your formal living room. As a result, you can opt for options like putting pillows on the floor so everyone can get comfy together while watching a movie. Creating this type of design also means you can send your kids and their friends here when they're getting a little too rowdy in the main part of your home.

Office

Not every attic provides a large space. If you want to utilize your attic in a different way but it's just too cramped for multiple people, that doesn't mean you have to settle for storage. Instead, you can turn this space into an office. The main advantage of using your attic as an office is since it's away from the core parts of your home, it will be less likely for you to be disturbed while you're working.

Workout Room

Whether you want do yoga, lift dumbbells or do cardio, using your attic as a gym means you can enjoy the convenience of working out at home without the need to have fitness equipment sitting out in the main areas of your house.

Although those are arguably the most popular alternate uses of attics, keep in mind that the ones we covered are just examples. If you've already got a different idea in mind, you shouldn't hesitate to follow it. The important thing to remember is even though an attic isn't as visible as other areas of a home, it's still a space that can be utilized in really interesting ways!
