3 Great Ideas for Storage Space in Your Custom Home Design

When you're in the process of designing your custom home, there are a lot of things that you need to think about and evaluate. While this process is very rewarding, it does seem like you have to constantly make decisions. Because it's possible for that to get a little overwhelming at times, it's not difficult to see how you could actually overlook an aspect of the design.

One example of this is the built-in storage you have. Although a quality custom home design company will make sure you address this issue prior to the end of the design process, that doesn't mean it's something that will have been on your mind far in advance. But now that you are thinking about it, if it's a subject you'd like to explore more in-depth, you'll be happy to learn that's exactly what we're going to do throughout the rest of this post:

Where Should Your Custom Home Have Built-In Storage?

As you may have guessed, there's not really a "right" answer to that question. The reason is not every homeowner is the same. At the end of the day, it comes down to the needs of your family. That being said, there are some general guidelines that can help ensure you're happy with the storage decisions you make. In terms of areas, the three most popular and useful are in benches, under the stairs and around the deck. Let's take a look at each of those three proven opportunities for including storage space:

Benches

When you're designing your custom home, windows may be one of the elements you focus on quite a bit. Not only does having plenty of windows around your home allow you to enjoy the view outside, but bringing in as much natural light as possible will make your home feel very spacious and welcoming. In any corners where you have multiple windows, you may opt to have benches built directly into the wall. For those spots, make sure there's a way to lift the top of the benches so you can use the concealed space below for storing items like beach towels, blankets and out of season clothing.

Under the Stairs

Adding storage here is a great way to make the most of your space. If you choose something like one or more small closets, you'll provide your family with convenient access to items they use on a regular basis.

Around the Deck

Although it's going to have a completely different look, you can take advantage of the previously discussed bench idea for your deck as well. What's nice about this option is in addition to the other items you store, you can have pillows for your outdoor benches and then store them directly inside the bench when the weather gets bad.

What's great about adding built-in storage to a custom home is once you start thinking of ways to accomplish that goal, you'll find there's no shortage of options for adding storage that's convenient but out of sight.
